Carhood shows that car drivers can talk to each others while driving. In the mobile city, neighborhood feeling steadily fades away.
We hardly communicate with our fellow road users, because we do not have proper channels to do so. Carhood forms a neighborhood
feeling among motorists.
The wireless LAN network enables car-to-car communication with the cars
alongside. Instead of a "tinned" experience, car driving becomes a social
outgoing experience. If a car driver meets a friend or neighbor on the
streets, he can call the other car, by activating the sensors in the roof. A
car-to-car connection, similar to an open phone connection, is build up.
Drivers can communicate freely over 300 meters distance.
The car-to-car consortium is, among others, aiming to equip all future
cars with WLAN enabling technology. It's first aim is to enhance safety on
the streets, although the system will be capable of performing many more
applications, such as carhood. For more information, visit www.car-2-car.
org.
A formation of two cars is exhibited at the designmai, with typical communication modules in the roofs of both cars. The public can operate and
experience car-to-car communication. Explanation on how to do this can be found inside the cars, as well as on the website. Carhood
was executed with the support of Technology Playgroup Europe.
